In light of our 'Awesome India' Competition we are discovering all kinds of fantastic Indian Artists.  We've written before about Australian artists we love, like Gabriella Hirst but we have to admit we didn't know all that much about Indian artists.  We undertook some serious research and here are three young Indian artists that we think you should know about, as they are just fantastic!

Vicky Roy - Photographer and Survivor

This 23 year old photographer has an amazing life story and body of work for someone so young!  Born to a very poor family in a village, Vicky left home and ended up on the streets of Delhi.  Homeless and living on the platform of the Delhi train station for a year, Vicky worked as a rag picker before being helped by the Salam Balak Trust.  However is wasn't until Vicky met British photographer Dixie Benjamin that his life would go places he never dreamed of.  Dixie invited Vicky on a photo shoot around Old Delhi.  It was then that Vicky Roy discovered the transformative power of being behind the camera, and his life was changed forever.

Here you can see a little video with Vicky, talking about his life and work:

Here is a great round up of images from Vicky's 2008 work on the rebuilding of the Twin Towers (as he discusses in the above video).

Shilpa Gupta - Woman of Many Talents

Shilpa Gupta is a talented Indian artist living and working in Mumbai.

Pretty neat huh? As you can see from Shilpa's work, she is an interdisciplinary artist who works with interactive video, websites, objects, photographs, sound and public performances.  In the video above you can see how the viewers become a part of the artwork...we just love the way her mind works!

Gupta's works examine 'themes of consumer culture, desire, security, militarism and human rights'.  Her work is highly political and critical of the relationship between the west and the east.  Her works are charged with passion, thought and vision - and that's why we love her!

Bharti Kher - Sculpture, Painter, Bindi Lover.

Bharti Kher is one of India’s best-known contemporary artists. Bharti is also an interdisciplinary artist, working in sculpture, painting, photography and installations.  Often her work incorporates the very Indian element of Bindis Whilst Bharti was born in the UK, she lives and works in New Delhi.

In particular we love her work 'I've seen an elephant fly', from 2002.  This life sized sculpture of a baby elephant is made of fiberglass and like much of Bharti's art... covered head to toe in bindi's!
