Valentines Day: The Single's Solution

Valentine’s Day is the one day all single girls dread.  It can be upsetting, annoying or just out right gag-worthy to see so many couples openly expressing their love. I mean, if I see another teddy holding a love heart, I may have to poke my eye out.

This year, I have a better way to celebrate the day of love. I will be my own valentine and show myself some love. Here’s how you could do the same.

SPOIL YOURSELF

This year, instead of spending your hard earned money on a sappy gift for someone else, you can spend it on something awesome for yourself. The best bit is, you will get something you actual want and like. My wish list includes a new hair colour and a cute dress because I deserve it. Any gift will do as long as it makes you feel fabulous.

FRIEND TIME

Spend some quality time with the friends you love. It’s a well-known Valentine’s Day ritual for single girls but it will never get old. Call the girls around, pick your favourite movie, prepare some yummy snacks and have an old fashioned sleepover. My number one tip is to ditch The Notebook in favour of something more anti-Valentine, perhaps your favourite horror movie.

Short on single friends? Go on a lady date instead. Have lunch with your bestie followed by a luxurious mani-pedi. Remember, it’s important to show love to the friends who have always been there for you.

COMPLIMENT YOURSELF

Why not offer yourself a compliment? I know it may sound crazy but think of it more like a positive affirmation. When practiced daily, positive affirmations help increase your self-esteem and confidence. Remember that you don’t need someone else to tell you how great you are.

One of my own affirmations is, “I am a beautiful person and I live a beautiful life”. Come up with your own and recite them daily. Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to start practicing self-love.

LOVE WITH A PRICE TAG

You, as a single lady can also skip the money-spinning Valentine’s Day hype all together.

This year, Australians will spend more than 908 million dollars on Valentine’s Day Gifts. It seems there’s now a price tag attached to love and romance. However, in my experience true romance cannot be bought.

A date once bought me expensive flowers and took me out to a fancy restaurant. The night was seemingly romantic, but ending with a simple goodbye and no good night kisses. I couldn’t figure out what went wrong. I mean, I was so charming. Then I saw the spinach stuck in my teeth and he hadn’t even told me about it. Romantic? I think not. He may have spent the money but ultimately the night was void of any true romance.

Don’t be hung up on not having a special someone to celebrate with this year. Be grateful for all the wonderful things you do have. Use the day to connect with yourself and what matters most to you and be your own valentine.
